BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) appears to be in no mood of practicing leniency on Indian cricketers following their failure to qualify for ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025 final on the back of dismal performances at home and away. As a result, more curbs are likely to be put on players in order to ensure that their focus lies solely on the job in hand.

With the richest board in the cricketing ecosystem already limited its players’ family time and another set of reports suggesting performance-based variable pay, if latest reports are to be believed, players would no longer be allowed to carry along personal staff on overseas tours.

BCCI Set To Tighten The Screws On Indian Cricketers

As per Dainik Jagran, board officials are thinking on the lines of denying players the permission to travel outside the country with staff members such as chefs, hairstylists, personal security guards etc.

For those who don’t know, modern-day Indian cricketers have made it a habit to take along these people for various reasons. While BCCI takes care of accommodation of players’ immediate family members (wives/girlfriends/children), expenses of the additional personnel are expected to be borne by the players themselves.

With this being the latest development, it remains to be seen if any high-profile cricketer will raise concern with respect to the same. It is to be noted that captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had met board officials during a review meeting following India losing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 1-3 down under.

Are These Measures Too Strict?

Without taking a refuge in diplomacy, allowing players to travel with their families and personal workforce is a subjective decision. Outside cricket, there have been enough examples to prove how athletes or teams have excelled with or without families.

For a board which splurges money on its players like anything, it is well within its rights to forcefully apply restrictions especially at a time of embarrassing performances spanning over oppositions, conditions and formats.
