Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head were both penalised by the ICC for their heated face-off in Adelaide. In Gqeberha, South Africa flattened Sri Lanka while a particular report originating from India indicates a possible rift between Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest news that emerged out of Monday, December 9.

Siraj, Travis Head Hit With Demerit Points For Adelaide Face-Off

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed one demerit point each to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and Australian middle-order batter Travis Head for their heated altercation at the Adelaide Oval. Moreover, the apex body also fined Siraj 20 percent of his match fees for giving Head an aggressive send-off during the first Australian innings of the pink-ball Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Adelaide.

The Indian paceman was found guilty for breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.” Travis Head, on the other hand, was sanctioned for breaching Article 2.13, relating to “abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match.”

Both cricketers will now square-off in the third Test of the series at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 14 onwards.

Keshav Maharaj Takes Five In Thumping South African Win

South Africa steamrolled the visiting Sri Lankans in the second Test of their two-match series in Gqeberha by 109 runs. Defending 348, the Proteas required five more wickets for a victory on Day 5, with Sri Lanka resuming their overnight innings at 205-5.

Keshav Maharaj and express pacemen Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen shrugged off the final five Sri Lankan wickets in just 17 overs of the final day, mopping up the visitors for 238. Maharaj picked up five wickets in the innings for just 76 runs in 25 overs to snare his 11th Test five-fer. Dane Paterson, for picking up five in the first innings and another two in the second, was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his seven-wicket haul. The outcome helped South Africa seal the two-match rubber by a 2-0 margin, as they helped themselves to the top of the 2023-25 WTC points table.

Rift Between Mohammed Shami And Rohit Sharma: Reports

Indian captain Rohit Sharma and injury-prone Mohammed Shami reportedly had a heated exchange during their reunion in Bengaluru back in mid-October this year. Shami, who played his last international match in November 2023, was rehabilitating at the NCA in Bengaluru at the time when a Rohit Sharma-led India hosted New Zealand at the nearby M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

As per reports, Shami met Sharma during the India vs New Zealand Test in Bengaluru where the speedster had a heated exchange with the skipper over the latter’s remarks on his pending fitness and availability.

Devon Conway To Miss NZ vs ENG 3rd Test For Birth Of His Child

New Zealand opener Devon Conway is set to miss his team’s third and final Test of the series against the visiting England. New Zealand Cricket confirmed the same on December 9, i.e., five days prior to the launch of the Hamilton Test. Conway will miss the match to be with his family for the birth of his first child. He will be replaced by former Hong Kong cricketer and New Zealand’s white-ball star Mark Chapman.

In New Zealand’s crushing defeats to England in Christchurch and Wellington, Conway managed to tally just 21 runs across four innings at a meagre average of 5.25.

Vintage Shoaib Malik Flays Lions In Champions T20 Cup

Former Pakistan captain and T20 veteran Shoaib Malik put up an all-round exhibition for Stallions in match number four of the Pakistan Champions T20 Cup 2024 against the Lions in Rawalpindi. The 42-year-old, nearing 43, packed four boundaries in his 30-ball 39 to blaze the Stallions to a competitive 162-5 upfront.

In the second half of the game, the off-spinner picked up two wickets, including the prized-scalp of a well-set Hasan Nawaz to bag figures of 2-23 from his four overs. The Stallions ended up winning the game by 12 runs, with Malik being rewarded with a ‘Player of the Match’ award.
