In a remarkable achievement, experienced Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj has won the ICC Player of the Month award for August due to his exploits against England. The apex body made the major announcement through a post on its official handle on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Siraj Rewarded For His Superb Outing Vs England
On Monday, the ICC announced that Mohammed Siraj has leapfrogged West Indies seamer Jayden Seales and New Zealand veteran Matt Henry for the monthly award. Although Siraj played only one match in August, his extraordinary spell against England at The Oval ensured a commendable win for the visiting side, helping them secure a historic draw in the Test series.
While speaking to the ICC, Siraj, who scripted India's clinical victory by scalping nine wickets in the match, said,
"It is a special honour to be named ICC Player of the Month. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was a memorable series, and it was one of the most intense contests I have been part of. “I am proud that I could contribute with some important spells, especially in the decisive moments. Bowling against a top batting lineup in their home conditions was challenging, but it also brought out the best in me. This award belongs as much to my teammates and the support staff as it does to me, because their constant encouragement and belief kept me going."
This is the first time Mohammed Siraj has won the ICC Player of the Month award. He joins Shubman Gill (4 times), Jasprit Bumrah (2 times), Shreyas Iyer (2 times), Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Indian players who have bagged the award before him in international cricket. That said, Siraj isn't a part of India's Asia Cup squad and might return to competitive cricket for the home Test series against West Indies.
