Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is set to make his return to ODI cricket through the upcoming home series against England. The speedster was included in the Indian squad after he recovered from the injury he sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India back in late-2023.

Through the course of his return, Shami also finds himself on the cusp of achieving a major ODI landmark, currently held by Australian pace legend Mitchell Starc.

Mohammed Shami needs five more wickets to join Starc

Mohammed Shami is currently sitting on a pile of 195 ODI wickets from just 100 innings. The speedster picked up 24 of those wickets in just seven innings of the 2023 World Cup in India. If Shami manages to add five more wickets to his tally in India’s first ODI of the upcoming three-match home series against England, the 34-year-old will become the fastest cricketer in history to complete 200 scalps in the format.

Legendary Australian pacer Mitchell Starc holds the current record, having attained the feat in the 102nd match of his ODI career. Here is a look at five quickest bowlers in ODI history to complete 200 wickets to date:

Bowler
Matches to complete 200 ODI wickets
Mitchell Starc (AUS)102
Saqlain Mushtaq (PAK)104
Trent Boult (NZ)107
Brett Lee (AUS)112
Allan Donald (SA)117

Mohammed Shami recently made his return to international cricket through India’s T20I match against England in Rajkot last week. While the speedster went wicketless on his return, he picked up match-winning figures of 3-25 a couple of days later at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Nonetheless, the series against England also marks Shami’s testing ground before the all-important 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE later this month. The matches against England will be played between February 6 and February 12 in Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad before the ‘Men in Blue’ will depart for the main event.
