Lahore is set to witness intensified security as Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel will be deployed on Wednesday (February 5) to ensure safety and protection for teams participating in the upcoming tri-nation series. The series will feature Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa. It is important to mention that the much-awaited first match of the series will collide with a planned protest by Imran Khan’s party, PTI, on February 8.
Security Measures Made Ahead Of Tri-Nation Series
A spokesperson from the Federal Interior Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that special security arrangements have been made, with Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Punjab police personnel being deployed.
The security concerns come as PTI, led by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has announced plans to observe February 8 as ‘Black Day’. The party has declared its intention to hold a protest rally at Minar-e-Pakistan, despite the government not granting official permission.
“The Federal Interior Ministry has allowed the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers for security duties of New Zealand and South Africa cricket teams for the tri-nation cricket series in Lahore between February 5 and February 10,” a spokesperson for the ministry said on Tuesday.
The tri-nation series matches will take place in Lahore from February 8 to 10 and later in Karachi from February 12 to 14. The first match of the the tri-series will commence on February 8th with a day-night clash between Pakistan and New Zealand.
After this, New Zealand will face South Africa February 10th. On February 12, Pakistan will face South Africa, and this will be the last league stage match. The top two teams from the league stage will face off in the final on February 14th. Both matches on February 12th and 14th will be day-night games.
