Michael Vaughan Cleared of Racist Allegations Claimed by Azeem Rafiq

In a massive relief for former England captain Michael Vaughan, he has been cleared of 'racist' charges made against him by former Yorkshire teammate Azeem Rafiq. Vaughan took to the social media site Twitter to announce that England and Wales Cricket (ECB) had dismissed the allegations against him after an independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel found the evidence to be inconclusive ("not satisfied on the balance of probabilities that this form of words was said").

Rafiq in an explosive scandal, back in 2021, had accused Vaughan of verbally making a racist comment "too many of you lots" against him, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, and Ajmal Shahzad back in 2009, before a T20 match against Nottinghamshire.

Here's what Vaughan wrote

"Now that the ECB's charge against me has been dismissed, I want to thank the panel for their careful attention in very difficult circumstances and to thank all of those who have given me their support during an incredibly difficult period in my life.

The dismissal of the specific charge that concerned me takes nothing away from Azeem's own live experiences."

Based on Rafiq's claims, the ECB had charged Vaughan and five other people — John Blain, Tim Bresnan, Andrew Gale, Matthew Hoggard and Richard Pyrah — for making racist or derogatory comment in June 2022.

Interestingly, the former England skipper was the only person to appear before the CDC hearing, which was a public hearing lasting four days.
