In a surprise, MI pacer Deepak Chahar made a quiet but impactful return to the Indian camp at The Oval. While not officially part of the Test squad, Chahar joined the team during their practice session on Wednesday and rolled his arm over in the nets, offering a crucial training boost at the perfect time.
Team India is gearing up for the fifth and final Test against England, scheduled at The Oval, starting from July 31. After a draw in Manchester, the visitors have an opportunity to level the series 2-2 by winning at The Oval.
Deepak Chahar Offers Helping Hand To Team India In London
Interestingly, India’s pace attack is reeling with injuries and workload stress. Hence, to assist the team in the net session, Mumbai Indians pacer Deepak Chahar turned up at The Oval.
In a video captured by TOI’s Sahil Malhotra, Chahar bowled to the top-order batters during net practice, helping them prepare for England’s pace attack.
His appearance brought relief to Team India, especially with multiple injuries troubling the bowling unit. Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be rested due to workload concerns, while Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh also missed the fourth Test with injuries.
This isn’t the first time Chahar has quietly assisted the team. He had previously joined the Indian camp ahead of the third Test at Lord’s, even though he wasn’t officially named in the squad. On both occasions, he showed up in non-official training gear and helped simulate match-like conditions in the nets.
With India under pressure to win the Oval Test and level the series 2-2, Chahar’s involvement, even unofficially, comes at the right moment. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill are looking for every edge they can find, and Chahar’s ability to swing the ball both ways makes him a perfect net bowler in English conditions.
Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh Doubtful For Oval Test
According to media reports, Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature in the final Test against England due to workload concerns. Though he is fit, the management is extra cautious to prolong his longevity.
Apart from Bumrah, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is also doubtful for The Oval Test. His debut in Manchester was delayed due to a hand injury. Moreover, Arshdeep’s stitches are likely not healed, which could possibly deny him a debut on this tour.
