The fifth edition of The Hundred is due to start today, 5th August. Notably, this edition of the tournament is a bit different from the previous four. Ahead of the 2025 season, a few of the IPL franchises have invested in The Hundred teams, and we will see the competition from the grandest league on the doorstep of the home of cricket.

Notably, four Indian franchise owners are investing approximately £289 million across the Hundred teams. Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants are the franchises that have secured stakes in England cricket's most modernised version of the game.

The deal involved the valuation of the eight franchises at £975 million, representing English cricket's 'IPL moment'. The investment is a landmark, marking a pivotal shift toward global franchise cricket, with Indian ownership groups now controlling or co-owning The Hundred's teams.

Mumbai Indians

The owners of the Mumbai Indians, Reliance Industries Limited, bought a 49% stake in the Oval Invincibles for £60 million. The Ambani-owned conglomerate outbid the Silicon Valley tech consortium and private equity giant CVC Capital to acquire shares of the defending champions. Surrey County Cricket Club retained the controlling 51% stake, maintaining the majority of the ownership.

Delhi Capitals

The GMR Group, co-owners of the IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, executed the most comprehensive investment. They acquired the Hampshire County Cricket Club for £120 million in 2024, and then acquired the remaining 49% of Southern Brave's stake for £48 million. This gave effective control of the franchise to the GMR group.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sun Group, owners of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, made history by becoming the first Indian business group to acquire 100% ownership of a Hundred Franchise. The £100 million investment by the Sun Group in the Northern Superchargers, in turn, helped Yorkshire clear their £25 million in debts.

Lucknow Super Giants

The RPSG Group, owners of the Lucknow Super Giants, invested around £81 million for a 70% ownership stake in the Manchester Originals. The franchise is rumoured to be rebranded as the Manchester Super Giants, aligning with RPSG's global brand; however, as per the latest news, no such rebranding has yet taken place.

Conclusion

As we await the start of a new season of The Hundred, it will be interesting to see how Indian cricket fans engage with this league, supporting their local franchises. With Indian names, especially that of the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, now involved in The Hundred, we can expect a surge in the Indian viewership for the tournament.
