In a significant development, SA wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi will not be featuring for MI Cape Town (MICT) this season. Shamsi was picked by the franchise in the September auction for R500,000 (approx. $28,500). He opted out of the tournament for personal reasons. It is important to mention that the franchise has already announced Thomas Kaber as the replacement.

Earlier, Shamsi represented Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals in SA20. He is currently playing for Northern Warriors in the Abu Dhabi T10. Earlier this year, he opted out of South Africa's central contract and was not part of South Africa’s ODI series against India. His last T20I appearance came during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

"I have decided to opt out of my central contract in order to be more flexible during the domestic season, allowing me to explore all opportunities available and look after my family in the best way possible,” commented Shamsi.

Thomas Kaber returns as replacement

Thomas Kaber rejoins MI Cape Town, having been part of the franchise in previous seasons. He played one match in the 2024-25 title-winning campaign and eight matches in 2023-24. Taking a look at Kaber’s SA20 stats, the all-rounder has played 9 matches and took 10 wickets at an average of 16.60 and economy of 8.05. In the batting front, he has made 34 runs in 4 innings at a strike-rate of 117.24.

His all-round skills and wrist-spin will help MI Cape Town strengthen their squad, especially in Shamsi’s absence.

MI Cape Town squad and season opener

The defending champions already have a strong spin attack including Rashid Khan, George Linde, and Dane Piedt, while the pace attack features Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch, and Dwaine Pretorius.

MI Cape Town will begin their campaign on December 26, hosting Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands.
