In a major announcement, Gujarat Titans (GT) have named former Australian cricketer Matthew Wade as their assistant coach for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Wade, who previously played for the franchise in 2022 and 2024, is stepping into a coaching role after retiring from international cricket.
Matthew Wade Joins Gujarat Titans
Wade was part of the Gujarat Titans squad for two seasons but was not included in the IPL 2025 mega auction after his retirement. Now, he returns to the team in a different capacity. Sharing the news on social media, Gujarat Titans wrote,
"We love this Saturday Surprise, Wadey! ๐ Welcome back as our ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐จ๐๐๐ก. "
During his IPL career, Wade played 15 matches in total, with 12 of them for Gujarat Titans. He was also a key member of the team that won the IPL title in 2022 under Hardik Pandyaโs captaincy.
Wade will be working alongside head coach Ashish Nehra and other coaching staff members, including batting coach Parthiv Patel and assistant coaches Aashish Kapoor and Narender Negi.
Even though Wade recently won the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Hobart Hurricanes, he is now exploring coaching opportunities while still being open to playing in different leagues. His transition follows a similar path to Kieron Pollard, who also took up a coaching role with his IPL franchise after finishing his playing career in the league.
With a new ownership in place, GT will begin their IPL 2025 campaign on March 25 against Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
