Match-Fixing Threat Looms Over T20 Leagues; Confirms ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit Head

Match-fixing has been one of the biggest issues that has persisted in the game of cricket. From time and time again, the bookies have made contact with players, which has ruined the gentleman's game. 

The likes of Mohammad Azharuddin, Mohammad Amir, Salman Butt, and Sreesanth have been found guilty of such acts . Meanwhile, ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit Head, Alex Marshall, has warned cricket fans about potential corrupt activities in poorly managed T20 leagues around the world.  Meanwhile, Marshall has decided to retire after seven years as ICC's ACU Head.

“I am confident that the cricket you watch is safe and clean. But I am also absolutely sure that corruptors are constantly looking for a route into the game, particularly in badly run lower-level franchise leagues. The threat to the game is corruptors won’t go away while there is always money to be made, and they will look for weakness in the system to get in,” said Marshall as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. 

Afghanistan Cricketer Banned For Corruption

The recent incident surrounding corrupt activities occurred in Kabul Premier League. On Wednesday, August 7, ICC revealed that Ihsanullah was found guilty of corrupt practices during Kabul Premier League season 2 and will now be out of action for five years. '

"Janat was found guilty of violating Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, which involves improper influence or efforts to fix the result, progress, conduct, or any other aspect of a match. In light of this violation, he has been handed a five-year ban from all cricket-related activities. Janat has admitted to the charges and confessed to his involvement in corrupt activities,"  the ACB said in a statement. 

Corruption Approach Made During T20 World Cup 2024

During the T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA, it was hit by corruption claims. A Former Kenya player approached an Uganda seamer for a possible 'match-fixing'. However, the Uganda seamer took the appropriate step and reported the incident to ICC.
