In a significant development, star fast bowler Josh Hazlewood might miss the remainder of the Ashes due to a hamstring injury. The 34-year-old’s injury is reportedly worse than initially believed, and is likely to miss the entire five-Test contest.

Hazlewood first suffered the injury two weeks ago in a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, where New South Wales captain Steve Smith had to send him off the field after he bowled just nine overs in the second innings. Though the initial report suggested he had avoided a major problem, but the follow-up report ruled him out of the Perth Test.

Josh Hazlewood could miss entire Ashes

However, according to the latest update from veteran cricket reporter Peter Lalor. He has hinted that the Josh Hazlewood situation may be more serious than Cricket Australia has publicly confirmed. Speaking on 7 cricket, Lalor said he had heard 'whispers' that Hazlewood may not play again this series.

“If these whispers I’m hearing about Hazlewood are right, we’re not gonna see him again for the rest of the series if the worst comes to fruition,” Lalor stated.

His absence in the first Test was already a big blow, especially with Pat Cummins ruled out due to a back injury.

Injuries continue to haunt Hazlewood

If Hazlewood misses the rest of the Ashes, it will mark the second straight Australian summer lost to injury. Last season, he missed most of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to a calf issue. He also featured in just one match during the 2021–22 Ashes.

There is some good news for Australia as well, with captain Pat Cummins reportedly close to full fitness. He has been training at near full intensity and is expected to return for the second Test at the Gabba on December 4.
