Australia could be set for a massive boost ahead of the second Ashes Test, with captain Pat Cummins hinting that he might be fit enough to make a surprise return. After missing the first Test in Perth due to a back injury, Cummins has now given fans hope.

Before the beginning of the Ashes 2025, Cummins’ recurring back injury flared up, and he was sidelined for multiple weeks. Despite intense rehabilitation, the skipper couldn’t get fit in time and had to miss the Perth Test.

Pat Cummins hints at a comeback at Gabba

Australia have kicked off the Ashes 2025 with a bang as they won the Perth Test by 8 wickets. With the second Test scheduled at the Gabba, Brisbane, on December 4, Pat Cummins is hopeful of a comeback.

Speaking to Fox Cricket, he said he’s pulling up well and bowls over 10 overs on some days. However, Cummins is still avoiding going full throttle to avoid the risk of worsening the injury.

“It’s feeling good. I had a couple of good sessions in Perth this week, so having a big day where I’d bowl around 10 overs then a couple of quieter day and then going again. It’s on track and pulling up pretty well," Cummins said.

As far as a comeback goes, the Australian captain believes he has half a chance of a return.

"(I’m) half a chance for the next game. I’ll have a couple more bowls and then there could be about two weeks before the next one the way this one is going. I’m pretty hopeful and it’s probably better than it was a few weeks ago," he added.

In the absence of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith led Australia in Perth. The Test, interestingly, was concluded in just two days. Mitchell Starc filled in for Cummins to secure a 10-wicket match haul.

Travis Head hammered 123 off just 83 balls in a 205-run chase to help Australia go 1-0 in the five-game Ashes showdown.

Josh Hazlewood is still doubtful

Pat Cummins’ injury update is significantly crucial as Australia’s pace attack is paralysed. Josh Hazlewood, who also missed the Perth Test with a hamstring injury, is likely to be sidelined for the entire Ashes series.

Hazlewood didn’t travel to Perth after picking up the injury in a recent Sheffield Shield match, and reports suggest a return for the Gabba Test is unlikely.

In addition to that, opener Usman Khawaja walked off the field on day 2 of the Perth Test with a suspected injury. He is also doubtful for the second game, especially now that Travis Head has impressed as an opener.
