There is no move in cricket more divisive than the Mankad. One half of the world calls it fair play, the other half screams “spirit of the game.”
It is that moment where the laws of the game and the unwritten rules of cricketing ethics collide. And the IPL? It has had its fair share of Mankading drama, from full-blown dismissals to last-minute warnings, right down to fumbles in crunch moments.
Here’s a list of all the Mankading attempts in the IPL so far:
1. Ravichandran Ashwin vs Jos Buttler, IPL 2019
This is the one that set the internet on fire. On March 25, 2019, Rajasthan Royals were chasing 185 against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Jaipur. Jos Buttler was on song, batting like a dream, cracking boundaries and making the chase look like a stroll.
In the 13th over, Ravichandran Ashwin, then captain of KXIP, paused during his delivery stride and ran Buttler out at the non-striker’s end. The Englishman was clearly out of his crease, but he wasn’t expecting it. The third umpire had no hesitation and Buttler had to walk.
Then came a storm. Tempers flared, words were exchanged and the cricketing world split down the middle. Ashwin didn’t back down, “It was within the laws,” he said. Critics cried foul. Supporters called it smart cricket. The Royals collapsed from there, ending on 170/9. KXIP walked away with a 14-run win but it was the Mankad that dominated the headlines for weeks.
2. Ravichandran Ashwin vs Aaron Finch, IPL 2020
The very next season, Ashwin was donning Delhi Capitals’ jersey, and the Mankad talk followed him. In a game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Aaron Finch was at the non-striker’s end. Ashwin spotted him backing up a bit too far. But instead of removing the bails, he stopped, looked, and just let it pass. A warning, nothing more.
Turned out, Delhi coach Ricky Ponting had already had a word with Ashwin about not going down the Mankading path. And Ashwin, in a cheeky post-match tweet, wrote, “Let’s make it official!! ‘First and final warning’ for 2020. I am making it very clear !!”
3. Kieron Pollard vs Shikhar Dhawan, IPL 2021
IPL 2021 gave us another dramatic Mankad moment minus the dismissal. Mumbai Indians’ Kieron Pollard was bowling and midway through his run-up, he noticed Shikhar Dhawan had left the crease early. Pollard stopped, turned around, and gave Dhawan a stern finger-point.
No appeal. No bails dislodged. Just a silent message: “Try that again and you are gone.” The moment went viral. The crowd loved it. And it reignited the debate once more.
4. Harshal Patel vs Ravi Bishnoi, IPL 2023
This came during IPL 2023 when RCB had set a massive target of 213. LSG, somehow, clawed their way back into the game. With one run needed off the final ball, and nine wickets down, number 11 Avesh Khan was on strike.
At the non-striker’s end? Ravi Bishnoi, already halfway down the pitch before Harshal Patel released the ball. Harshal saw it. He stopped. Turned. Tried to Mankad him. And missed. The ball never hit the stumps.
Bishnoi survived. Next ball, a scrambled bye. LSG pulled off an incredible win, and Harshal was left wondering what might have been.
5. Digvesh Rathi vs Jitesh Sharma, IPL 2025
The latest chapter in this never-ending saga came during Match 70 of IPL 2025. RCB were chasing a massive total of 228 set by LSG. With Jitesh Sharma captaining in place of Rajat Patidar, RCB needed a special knock to pull it off and Jitesh delivered.
But drama unfolded when LSG’s young spinner, Digvesh Rathi, spotted Jitesh backing up early. He tried to run him out at the non-striker’s end and the umpires sent it upstairs. But just as the replay was being checked, LSG skipper Rishabh Pant did something surprising, he withdrew the appeal.
The moment sparked fresh debates. Did Pant do the right thing? Was it tactical or emotional? One thing was clear, RCB weren’t complaining. They chased down their highest-ever IPL total and booked a place in Qualifier 1 vs PBKS.
