Shubman Gill was named India's new Test cricket captain on Monday, succeeding the retired Rohit Sharma ahead of India's five-match Test series in England starting June 20. Gill's childhood teammate Abhishek Sharma, who partnered with him for Punjab in age-group cricket and during India's 2018 U-19 World Cup triumph, hailed the appointment as a landmark achievement.

The duo, pivotal in India’s junior setup under Rahul Dravid, shared formative years from U-14 level, with Gill finishing as India’s top run-scorer in their U-19 title-winning campaign.

Abhishek Sharma Expresses Pride in Gill’s Journey

Abhishek Sharma expressed profound pride in Gill’s ascent, tracing their shared cricketing roots back from their childhood.

“I think if I see his career you know if I remember the old days when we were just started playing for the U-14 and U-16 Punjab team. As youngsters, we all started with the red ball, from that time to now, it is a big achievement to become India’s Test captain and I feel very proud of him,” Abhishek stated in an interview with Star Sports.

Confident in Gill’s adaptability and ability to lead, Abhishek added, "He will execute his role flawlessly (Wo isko accha nibhayega bhi). I believe he’ll excel both as a player and leader for India," Sharma added.

Gill, appointed alongside vice-captain Rishabh Pant, becomes one of India's youngest red-ball leaders. His elevation follows a 32-Test career where he amassed 1,893 runs, including five centuries, though his overseas record shows 649 runs at 29.50 with one hundred.
