Team India outclassed New Zealand by four wickets with an over to spare to lift the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy title. Prominent Sri Lankan match official Kumar Dharmasena, who was the reserve umpire for the title clash, captured the post-match moments with his familiar and trademark selfie.
Dharmasena is known for his selfie clicks after the final match of every major ICC tournament. One of the first instances of the same can be dated back to the final of the 2019 ODI World Cup at Lord’s, where the Sri Lankan umpire can be seen standing in front of a dejected New Zealand team for a selfie.
Kumar Dharmasena clicks another ICC final selfie
Team India defeated New Zealand in the final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, March 9. The following day, reserve umpire Kumar Dharmasena shared snippets from the post-match proceedings to commemorate cricket’s festive occasion.
Dharmasena also stood in front of several other match officials as well as in front of rejoicing Indian players for a selfie, unbeknownst to either of the two parties present near the boundary.
Notably, this is not the first occasion of Kumar Dharmasena clicking a selfie to commemorate his presence at a high-octane ICC final. Starting his tradition with the 2019 World Cup final, the cricketer-turned-umpire also clicked and posted similar pictures after the 2021 T20 World Cup final, the 2022 T20 World Cup final and the 2023 WTC final at The Oval.
As it turned out, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets at the Dubai International Stadium. Being forced to field first, Indian bowlers Varun Chakravarthy (2-45) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-40) restricted New Zealand to just 251-7 from 50 overs.
In response, Indian captain Rohit Sharma bludgeoned 76 runs from just 83 balls at the top of the order before Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and unbeaten KL Rahul masterminded the remainder of Team India chase.
