New Zealand achieved a remarkable milestone as they managed to seal their first-ever Test series victory against South Africa in the history of cricket.

New Zealand and South Africa have locked horns for the Test Series since 1932. After almost a century and over 35 conducted series in both nations, the Kiwis registered their first Test series victory as they defeated the Proteas by 2-0.

South Africa’s tour of New Zealand began with the teams meeting for a three-day practice Test match, which ended as a draw in Lincoln.

By now, the New Zealand team was habitually ending the games in a draw against South Africa. However, 2024 seemed like they didn’t want to be satisfied with just a draw.

Kane Williamson guides New Zealand towards an astonishing series win

The Kiwis won both the Test matches in the series, beginning their dominance at Mount Maunganui. The young top-order batter Rachin Ravindra scored 240 runs to mark his first double-century in Test cricket.

This was then followed by Kane Williamson's twin centuries, which led New Zealand to an incredible start in the series as they won the match by a whopping margin of 281 runs.

With a lead in the series, the hosts began the game with a strong momentum on their side. The team's potent bowling attack consistently defended the low total in both innings to make them win the second Test by seven wickets. Williamson yet again saved the team by scoring a century and putting 133 runs on the board.

After being awarded the player of the match, Kane Williamson talked about the first Test series win against South Africa. He said,

"Coming into today on a wearing surface we knew we were going to have to string partnerships together. Credit to South Africa. Certainly, for the first couple of days, they outplayed us I thought. We had to fight hard to get out of that position and change momentum and with the partnerships and seeing off the new ball we were able to give ourselves the chance.”

After the series win, New Zealand currently stand at the top of the World Test Championship 2023-25 points table with 75 PCT, while South Africa have dropped to the number eight position with 25 PCT points.
