Kane Williamson, New Zealand's skipper and talismanic batter has been ruled out of the opening encounter of World Cup 2023 against the World Champions, England. Williamson suffered a knee injury in IPL 2023, and since then has been running against time to get match-fit for the all-important World Cup. Though he has recovered well and is likely to play a big part in the World Cup, he is not yet fit to take the field for the curtain raiser of the World Cup.

The World Cup 2023’s opening game will be played between the finalists of the last edition - England and New Zealand, at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. New Zealand seems to have a well-calculated plan for their skipper, and it seems like they don’t want to risk him early in the tournament.

However, Kane Williamson will play both the warm-up games, which are scheduled on 29th of September and the 2nd of October, against Pakistan and South Africa, respectively. He will not field in the Pakistan warm-up game and will play as a specialist batter while against South Africa, he will be fielding alongside batting.

Interestingly, Williamson was not expected to make it to the World Cup after he ruptured his interior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the opening game of IPL 2023 but has shown tremendous improvement in the last couple of months.

Tom Latham will lead New Zealand in Williamson’s absence for the opening game of the World Cup, but Williamson looks set to make it for New Zealand’s second game against the Netherlands on October 9.
