In a significant development, New Zealand's great Martin Guptill has announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday (January 8). Guptill left behind a legacy as New Zealand’s finest cricketers, particularly in the shortest format of the game.

He made his debut for New Zealand in January 2009 in ODI series against the West Indies. It is important to mention that, his rise in international cricket was swift, as he made his T20I debut just a month later against Australia. The New Zealand Opener also made his Test debut in the same year against India.

Martin Guptill's Emotional Words After Retirement

"As a young kid it was always my dream to play for New Zealand and I feel incredibly lucky and proud to have played 367 games for my country. I will forever cherish the memories made wearing the silver fern alongside a great group of guys. I want to say a huge thanks to all my teammates and coaching staff over the years, in particular Mark O’Donnell who has coached me since the Under 19 level and been a source of ongoing support and wisdom over my career.

A special thanks must also go to my manager Leanne McGoldrick - all of the work behind the scenes never went unnoticed and I’ll be forever appreciative of all your support," the 38-year-old said.

Martin Guptill's Remarkable Career

Martin Guptill's versatility and consistency allowed him to excel across all three formats of the game. Over the course of his illustrious career, Guptill represented New Zealand in more than 350 international matches. He featured in 198 ODIs, 122 T20Is, and 47 Tests.

Guptill’s most significant contribution came in the limited-overs formats, particularly in T20Is, where he is New Zealand's all-time leading run-scorer. In T20Is he made 3531 runs in 122 matches with an strike-rate of 135.70.

In ODIs, Guptill is also highly regarded for his consistency and skill. One of the most remarkable knocks includes a spectacular 237* against West Indies in 2015.

He was an integral part of New Zealand's team for over a decade, featuring in numerous ICC tournaments, that include the 2011, 2015, and 2019 World Cups.

In addition to his prowess in ODIs and T20s, Guptill also made significant contributions in Test cricket. In 47 matches that he has featured, he made 2586 runs with three centuries to his name.
