In a significant development, Gujarat Giants have appointed Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner as their new captain for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 season on Wednesday (February 5). Gardner takes over the reins from her teammate Beth Mooney as the franchise looks to turn its fortunes around.  

Since the league’s inception, Gardner has been a importanta player for the Giants. In the last two season the star cricketer made 324 runs and scalped 17 wickets. Despite her efforts, Gujarat Giants have struggled and finished at the bottom of the table in both editions. Last season, they managed just two wins in eight matches.  

Ashleigh Gardner Named As Gujarat Giants Captain

On Wednesday, the franchise shared an official Tweet and welcomed Gardner as their new captain.

After Ash Gardner was appointed as the captain, she expressed herself and said- 

“It is an absolute honour for me to be named the captain of Gujarat Giants. I have loved being a part of this team, and I am excited to lead this fantastic group in the upcoming season. We have a great mix of young and experienced players and plenty of Indian talent in our squad. I am looking forward to working with the team and making our fans proud,” Gardner said.

It is important to mention that, Gardner, will aim to lead a resurgence as the team gears up for a fresh start. The Gujarat Giants will begin their WPL 2025 campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on February 14 in Vadodara.
