In a significant development, England's fast bowler Chris Woakes has retired from international cricket. On Monday, September 29, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took to social media to inform fans about the right-seamer's retirement.
Chris Woakes bid adieu to the game after 14 Years
The decision comes right after the 36-year-old was left out of England's squad for the upcoming Ashes down under starting from November 21. "After fifteen years of dedication to the badge, we wish you all the best in your international retirement, Wizz," wrote ECB on their social media post.
Not only ECB, but Woakes himself penned an emotional note on social media, where he thanked the ECB for the opportunity and stated that the will continue to play county cricket and also explore franchise cricket in the coming years.
A decision taken after Ashes snub
Woakes' last appearance for England was during India vs England Test series in July-August 2025. However, in the fifth Test, Woakes dislocated his shoulder and was ruled out for a long time. The right-arm seamer was advised surgery, but Woakes declined it to be fit in time for Ashes 2025-26.
However, the 36-year-old was handed a massive blow as he was not selected for the series down under. Further, England men's team managing director Rob Key also dismissed having Woakes in near future and remarked that Woakes is unlikely to be picked in upcoming tours.

Woakes made his England debut in 2011 and has featured in 217 games for the Three Lions. Woakes end his carer with 396 wickets and 3705 runs with the bat. Also, Woakes has enjoyed several silverwares in his illustrious career.
Woakes has lifted the World Cup twice - 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Also, he boasts a player of the series award in Ashes.
