Former English batter Jonathan Trott has been appointed as new head coach of the Pretoria Capitals franchise for the SA20 2025 season. The 43-year-old will be replacing Graham Ford, who left the position back in June this year.

Jonathan Trott is currently helming the Afghanistan cricket team, a role he landed in 2022. Under his regime, Afghanistan recently secured its best-ever finish in a T20 World Cup, reaching the semifinals of the 2024 edition. Notably, his contract with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is set to expire later this year.

Pretoria Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs in this year’s SA20 2024 season, finishing fifth on the six-team competition. With head coach Graham Ford leaving his role a couple of months later, the vacant position has now been filled by former England cricketer and current Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott.

Trott’s commitment with the ACB is set to expire later this year, and there is no confirmation yet on whether he will be extending his contract with them. The 43-year-old will be expected to join the Pretoria Capitals franchise in January next year for the SA20 2025 season. As of now, his impending SA20 stint is not clashing with any international commitments.

During his playing days, Jonathan Trott played 52 Tests and additional 75 white-ball games for England. Across all his international appearances, the elegant right-handed batter tallied nearly 7,000 runs with 13 centuries and 42 half-centuries.
