Shreyas Iyer capped his forgettable red-ball return in the Duleep Trophy 2025 with twin failures against Central Zone. South Zone and Central Zone made it to the final of the tournament. In other news, England orchestrated an absolute run-fest against South Africa bowlers in Southampton.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, September 7.
Shreyas Iyer Fails Again In Forgettable Red-Ball Return
Shreyas Iyer once again failed to make the most of his return to red-ball cricket. After getting appointed as India A captain for the series against Australia A, Shreyas was dismissed for just 12 from 14 balls against Central Zone in the second semifinal of the 2025 Duleep Trophy season in Bengaluru. The cricketer also scored just 25 in the first innings to aggregate mere 37 runs in the match. Shreyas Iyer’s twin failures might well have put a serious dent to his prospects of making a Test return, considering the elegant right-hander last graced the format back in early 2024 during the series against England.
South Zone, Central Zone Make It To Duleep Trophy 2025 Final
South Zone and Central Zone made it to the final of the Duleep Trophy 2025 season after defeating North Zone and West Zone respectively in the two semifinals on the basis of first innings lead. Narayan Jagadeesan bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for the South Zone team in the first semifinal for packing scores of 197 and 52* across both innings. For Central Zone, all-rounder Saransh Jain scored 63* with the bat and picked up eight wickets in the game, including five on the final day.
Joe Root Levels Babar Azam As England Mount Record Total
Joe Root scored 100 off just 96 balls against South Africa in the third ODI at Southampton to record his 19th century in the format, thus levelling up with the likes of Babar Azam and former cricketers Brian Lara and Mahela Jayawardene. Root’s teammate Jacob Bethell also hammered down his own maiden ODI century by cracking 110 off just 82 balls with 13 boundaries and three huge sixes.
Jamie Smith and Jos Buttler’s additional 60s ensured England mounted 414-5 from 50 overs, as they levelled up with Team India to notch the second highest number of 400-plus totals in ODIs (seven each).
Kieron Pollard Blasts 54* Off 18 In CPL 2025 Thriller
West Indies and Mumbai Indians legend Kieron Pollard turned back the clock in match 23 of the CPL 2025 season for the Trinbago Knight Riders. Facing Guyana Amazon Warriors, the 38-year-old blasted a 17-ball half-century before finishing his turbulent knock at 54* from 18 balls with five boundaries and five huge sixes in Guyana. The innings marked his third fifty of the season as Pollard continues to make the most of his enduring power-hitting prowess and wealth of experience on the T20 stage during the twilight of his career.
Doug Watson Leaves As Scotland Coach After Qualifiers Failure
Former South Africa cricketer Doug Watson has tendered his resignation as head coach of the Scotland men’s cricket team. Watson has parted ways with Scotland after the team failed to qualify for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup next year. Under his guidance, Scotland recently suffered demoralizing defeats to Jersey and Italy in successive games at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Region Final 2025 in the Netherlands. Cricket Scotland has confirmed that the board will soon begin the process of finding a new head coach of the team.
