Winning the toss and batting first, Pakistan lost opener Sahibzada Farhan for a three-ball duck to Afghanistan paceman Fazalhaq Farooqi. Saim Ayub (17 off 19), number three Fakhar Zaman (27 off 26) and captain Agha Salman (24 off 27) all failed to convert their starts into prolific scores as the trio failed to read Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan’s collective spin threat. Ahmad also cleaned up Mohammad Haris for just two to claim tight figures of 2-17 in his four overs.

Mohammad Nawaz made 25 in 21 balls in the backend, while Faheem Ashraf listed 15 off eight to add crucial runs to the Pakistani total at the death as they reached a competitive 141-8. For Afghanistan, captain Rashid Khan picked up three wickets at an expense of 38 runs and Farooqi picked up his second in the form of Nawaz in the final over.
