English wicketkeeper George Maddy has been garnering a lot of attention lately. The middle-order batter made his First-Class debut at the tender age of 16 on Sunday, August 21. It was a stroke of luck for the young rookie to represent Warwickshire in their last two league matches of the Royal London One-Day Cup against Durham and Somerset.

Following the game against Middlesex, Warwickshire’s wicketkeeper, Michael Burgess was ruled out of the league. Since Burgess was the only keeper in the squad, Warwickshire had to look outside, and thus, they offered a rookie contract to Maddy.

Maddy was decent in his opening game against Durham. He didn’t receive a chance to bat, but being the wicketkeeper; the youngster played a crucial role in the team’s victory by 48 runs. His maiden First-Class catch was Sean Dickson off Liam Norwell. He picked another catch later in the game to dismiss Toman Mackintosh.

Maddy reveals his emotions on receiving the contract

His second domestic match saw him losing his wicket to Josh Davey at a score of seven runs off 11 balls. The youngster looked extremely happy as he narrated his experience from the two matches.

George Maddy said:

“It’s been really exciting. I can’t believe I’m actually in this position now and I’m really grateful. Of course, there were a few nerves going in, but it was nice playing at Edgbaston in front of our home crowd and as soon as the first over went I relaxed into it and it was just like any game of cricket.

“To get a contract for the Royal London was a lovely surprise. I wasn’t expecting it because I knew Burgy was in great form. I was really happy to get it and now I’ll just keep working hard in the winter and hopefully, in the future, I can extend that."

The youngster has a legacy to continue

Meanwhile, Maddy has a legacy to continue from his father, which will always add extra pressure on the youngster. Maddy's father Darren Maddy is a renowned first-class player with 197 appearances from 2007 to 2013.

Interestingly, Darren also played for Warwickshire at one point in his career. They are the first father-son duo to play English domestic cricket for Warwickshire since 1987. Darren was present in the stadium when his son made his debut and was a part of the cheering crowd.
