Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has backed Deepti Sharma for running out Charlie Dean at the non-striker’s end. Dean’s dismissal ensured Team India took home the ODI series 3-0. The win also ensured that Jhulan Goswami’s glittering international career met a triumphant end at Lord’s.

Harmanpreet Kaur says non-striker runout is part of the game

After the match, Kaur was asked to give her take on the controversial moment which ensued during the 44th over of the English run-chase. The hosts’ last wicket pair had stitched a 35-run partnership that threatened to chase down India’s paltry 169.

However, a well-settled Dean backed up too much for comfort and found herself short to Deepti Sharma’s cunning brilliance at the bowler’s end.

While running out batters at the non-strikers’ end has been legalised by the ICC, a legion of English supporters questioned the spirit of cricket from the Indian side.

During the post-match presentation, the Indian skipper backed her bowler and said her actions were part of the game. She said:

“Well, to be honest, I thought you will ask about the first 9 wickets as they were also not easy to take, yes but it's part of the game, and we didn't have done something new, it's part of the game, and it's ICC's rule. I will back my player. In the end, we needed to win.”
