Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a hefty bid of INR 14 crores to secure the playing services of New Zealand allrounder Daryl Mitchell ahead of the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Mitchell, who had registered for a base sum of INR 1 crore, emerged as one of the most expensive picks at the mini-auction for IPL 2024 held in Dubai on Tuesday (December 19). The Kiwi middle-order stalwart seems to have benefitted immensely from a strong showing at the ICC World Cup 2023 in India.

Released by Rajasthan Royals (RR) after just two outings back in IPL 2022, Mitchell returned to the bidding war with a magnificent campaign in the recently concluded edition of the quadrennial event. He amassed 552 runs in 10 innings of the World Cup, including two centuries against hosts India.

CSK Bags Daryl Mitchell For IPL 2024

CSK would've been attracted towards the 32-year-old experienced batter for his ability to negotiate spin expertly in the middle-order and offer decent part-time bowling capabilities in a dual role which shall come in handy on a spin-friendly deck in Chennai.

The franchise became a late entrant in the race to bag the desired cricketer after Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) had tussled it out, but once in, they weren't willing to offer a window of opportunity for any other side.

The MS Dhoni-led side added to their list of allrounders and brought in extra solidity to the batting unit with the Mitchell inclusion, keeping in mind his ability and range to play an anchor and aggressor plus to provide an option worth a couple of overs with the ball.

The New Zealand stalwart has been a formidable player across formats at the international stage and returns to the IPL with 20 Tests, 39 ODIs and 59 T20Is under his belt, making his runs in the shortest format at a strike-rate of 137.22.
