Franchises can retain up to six players ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. While earlier reports indicated that there will be no restriction over the selection of number of Indian or overseas players that can be retained, a latest update specifies that each franchise need to retain at least one uncapped Indian cricketer before the auction.

Franchises need to retain at least one uncapped player

As reported by ESPNCricinfo, each franchise will be required to retain at least one uncapped Indian cricketer for the IPL 2025 auction. The remaining five players can be Indians or overseas stars in any capacity.

The report further indicates that for retaining one uncapped player, a franchise needs to spend Rs. 4 crores. Overall, if a franchise utilizes all six retention options, they will be required to shell out a sum of Rs. 79 crores, with the first three retention costing Rs. 18 crores, Rs. 14 crores and Rs. 11 crores respectively, and the next two once again amounting to Rs. 18 crores and Rs. 14 crores.

Impact Player rule to stay on for IPL 2025

In another major update, the ‘Impact Player’ rule will continue to remain in place for next year’s IPL edition. The controversial player substitute rule has drawn much criticism from all corners of the Indian cricketing fraternity, with some alleging its application to be undermining for the next generation of all-rounders.

Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal even expressed his disregard over the rule, and claimed that its policy is hindering the growth of all-rounders. Jindal, however, did credit the rule for giving fresh opportunities to young players.

When is IPL 2025 mega auction?

The IPL 2025 mega auction is scheduled to be organized in either late-November or early-December. The BCCI is expected to make some major announcements in the coming weeks.
