The Bangladesh cricket team, commonly known as "The Tigers," has emerged as a formidable competitor in international cricket. Administered by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the team holds Full Member status with the International Cricket Council (ICC), allowing it to compete in Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Though their journey to prominence took time, Bangladesh has shown character and spirit by marking their presence in every format. Bangladesh’s story is one of perseverance and continuous improvement, from stunning upsets to historic wins.
Bangladesh Team History
Bangladesh's international cricket journey began in 1979 when it participated in the ICC Trophy. After becoming an associate member of the ICC in 1977, Bangladesh's fortunes began to turn with its first major victory in the 1997 ICC Trophy. This win led Bangladesh to become a Test-playing nation in 2000 when it debuted against India.
The Tigers gradually improved, especially in ODIs, where their memorable victories over Pakistan (1999 World Cup) and England (2015 World Cup) stand as significant milestones.
Though Bangladesh has not yet won an ICC trophy, it has experienced its share of wins in multi-nation tournaments. The 2017 ICC Champions Trophy semi-final run and the 2019 Ireland Tri-Nation Series win are among the highlights of Bangladesh’s cricket journey. It has also come close to major silverware, finishing as runners-up in multiple Asia Cups.
