IPL 2022 | Yuzvendra Chahal in favor of changing bowling laws

T20 cricket has since its inception been a batter-friendly format. Short boundaries, multiple powerplays, and free-hits have made it even stricter for the bowlers. In the match between Rajasthan Royals' (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC), Yuzvendra Chahal rattled David Warner's stumps only to be refused a wicket because the bail didn't get dislodged from the groove.

Chahal had thus asked for this rule to be changed. He said that if the ball manages to hit the stumps, regardless of whether the bails fall off or not, the batsman should be declared out.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Chahal explained, "We can do that because at a crucial time, and it is a big event or match or final, then something like this happens because if the ball hits the wicket, then it should be out. If it is given not out just because the bails have not fallen off, then it could cost you a match. It definitely will affect the (bowling) team."

The Australian eventually scored an unbeaten 52* to guide Delhi to their sixth win of the season.

Such incidents are not new to the Indian Premier League (IPL) or international cricket. The new LED-based bails are heavier in comparison to old wooden ones and hence do not drop off with ease.

The wily leg-spinner added that because this was his first time witnessing such an episode, he was caught off-guard.

"Since it was the first time this happened with me, even I was shocked because the ball hit the wickets and the bails did not fall. If such a thing happens at a crucial time, especially with a batsman like Warner, who does not offer too many chances… so if he had got out at that juncture, then probably the match result could have been different," Chahal concluded.

The Indian ace tweaker is the joint highest wicket-taker in IPL 2022 with 23 wickets, alongside Wanindu Hasaranga.
