In a significant development, South Africa’s Test captain, Temba Bavuma, is facing another setback in his career, with a recurrence of his left elbow injury just two months ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia. He has struggled with elbow issues in the past as well and was forced to withdraw from the domestic first-class final in Johannesburg, which began today (April 10, 2025).

According to Espncricinfo, Temba Bavuma was due to join the Lions team from Cape Town on Tuesday, but failed to arrive in Johannesburg. The team was informed late on Wednesday about his injury. The severity of the injury, as well as which elbow is affected, remains unclear.

Temba Bavuma's Elbow Injury Timeline

It is important to note that South Africa's star player has always been in the limelight and has faced several setbacks in his career due to injuries. His left elbow has plagued him since 2022 when a serious fracture forced him out of South Africa’s tour to England that year.

The injury sidelined him for three months, but his troubles did not end there. Last year, while playing an ODI against Ireland in Abu Dhabi, he re-injured the same elbow after falling awkwardly while completing a single. This forced him to miss South Africa’s Test series against Bangladesh as well.

However, with his elbow injury forcing him to miss crucial match again, questions now surround his ability to recover in time for the World Test Championship final.

Having said all this, Bavuma’s leadership remains an important aspect and his steady presence at the helm has been a defining factor in South Africa’s performance over recent years.
