In a major update for cricket fans, India’s captain Shubman Gill has reportedly been released from the national team ahead of the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, starting on November 22.
According to a report Gill left the team on Friday and has already flown to Mumbai from Guwahati.
Shubman Gill advised to rest for two to three days
The Times of India sources say that Gill will rest in Mumbai for the next two to three days, after which he is expected to consult Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, a specialist doctor. At the moment, there is no plan for him to travel to the BCCI Centre of Excellence, and more information about his recovery should be available in the coming days.
Gill picked up his injury during Day 2 of the Kolkata Test. He hurt his neck while playing a sweep shot early in India’s first innings. Even though the ball went for a boundary, Gill immediately clutched his neck in pain and had difficulty continuing. He had to walk off the field retired hurt and could not return for the rest of the innings.
Later, the Punjab batter also missed India’s run chase of 124 runs because he was taken to the hospital for precautionary scans.
Before leaving the match, Gill scored only four runs, and India eventually went on to lose the Kolkata Test. This injury comes at an unfortunate time, as Gill has been in fantastic form during the World Test Championship cycle, scoring 950 runs in just 14 innings, with an average close to 80.
With Gill’s unavailability for the second Test now confirmed, attention has shifted to vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who is expected to lead the team in Guwahati.
Pant had taken charge in the first Test after Gill left the field injured on Day 2, but the responsibility will be much bigger this time. India are trailing in the series, and the second Test will be crucial for a comeback.
