Team India topped the Group A points table of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy by defeating New Zealand in Dubai. Vidarbha clinched the 2025 Ranji Trophy title by outclassing Kerala. Furthermore, the BCCI has imposed several strict restrictions on franchises over the training routines for IPL 2025.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, March 2.

Chakravarthy Takes Five As India Top Group A Table

Team India steamrolled New Zealand by 44 runs in the final group match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Batting first, the ‘Men in Blue’ hauled 249-9 from 50 overs on a seemingly slow Dubai surface. Shreyas Iyer top-scored with a cracking 79 while Hardik Pandya belted a run-a-ball 45 during the slog overs. For New Zealand, fast bowler Matt Henry picked up five wickets at an expense of 42 runs from eight overs and his pace maters Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke also chipped in with a wicket each.

In response, India’s comeback man Varun Chakravarthy picked up his maiden ODI five-fer to envelop the entire New Zealand innings for just 205. Kuldeep Yadav also picked up two of his own as Team India topped the Group A points table to set a semifinal date with perennial ICC event rivals, Australia.

Rohit Sharma Loses Tenth Toss In A Row

Indian captain Rohit Sharma once again lost the toss, this time against New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner in the final Group A game of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The latest outcome marked Sharma’s tenth consecutive loss at a toss in ODIs, as the unwanted streak launched during the fag end of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

In terms of most consecutive tosses lost by a captain, Rohit Sharma now finds himself only behind Brian Lara (12) and Peter Borren (11).

Vidarbha Win Ranji Trophy 2025 Over Kerala

Vidarbha clinched the 2025 Ranji Trophy title by defeating Kerala on the basis of first innings lead in the final. Resuming its second innings at 249-4 on Day 5, Vidarbha reached 375-9 from 143.5 overs before captains from both sides agreed to a draw.

Run-machine Karun Nair top-scored in the innings by composing 135 runs from 295 deliveries with 10 boundaries and two huge sixes. Darshan Nalkande and top-order batter Danish Malewar also made half-centuries to rescue Vidarbha after the early dismissals of both openers in Nagpur. The outcome marked Vidarbha’s third Ranji Trophy title, and the first since winning the 2018-19 edition.

Rizwan Likely To Be Replaced By Shadab Khan As T20I Captain

Mohammad Rizwan will likely be removed as Pakistan’s T20I captain, as per a report from senior journalist, Ejaz Wasim Bakhri. Under the leadership of Rizwan, the Pakistan team recently bowed out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy within the opening round, shortly after losing an ODI tri-series at home to New Zealand.

As per reports, the PCB is aiming to reduce Rizwan’s workload, and might appoint all-rounder Shadab Khan as national T20I skipper for the upcoming white-ball tour of New Zealand.

BCCI Restricts Practice Sessions For IPL 2025

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a strict set of rules regarding training sessions for all franchises in the upcoming IPL 2025 season. As per a new directive, the BCCI has restricted the number of practice sessions to just seven with the duration of training under floodlights being just three hours. Moreover, teams will not be allowed to practice on main square wickets, but can use side wickets leading up to their first home game.
