In a huge announcement made on Tuesday by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Sri Lanka's Dambulla has been chosen as the venue for the much-anticipated Women's Asia Cup 2024.

This edition, slated to run from July 19 to 28, marks a significant leap in the tournament's history. It will showcase eight teams, a step up from the previous edition in 2022.

ACC confirms Women's Asia Cup 2024 opening on July 19

This increase not only reflects the rising wave of interest in women's cricket across Asia but also sets the stage for an exhilarating cricket carnival that promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

The tournament will see traditional cricket giants such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh aiming for supremacy alongside the emerging forces of UAE, Malaysia, Nepal, and Thailand.

These latter four earned their spots as the semi-finalists of the Women's Premier Cup 2024, ready to challenge the status quo and add an extra layer of competitiveness to the proceedings.

A noteworthy aspect of the Women's Asia Cup 2024, in line with the ACC's ongoing mission for equality and inclusivity in cricket, is the continuation of an all-female refereeing and umpiring panel.

This initiative, first introduced in the previous edition, highlights the tournament's role in breaking barriers and setting new benchmarks in the world of sports. In a statement by the ACC, President Mr Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm about the event.

“The Women's Asia Cup 2024 underscores the ACC's commitment to promoting women's cricket in the region. We are excited to see the increased participation and competitiveness among the teams, reflecting the growing popularity and importance of women's cricket," the statement read.

The teams have been divided into two groups. Group A comprises India, Pakistan, UAE, and Nepal, while Group B will see Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Thailand clash.

The tournament kicks off with Pakistan facing Nepal and India squaring off against UAE on the opening day, July 19.

The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan match is scheduled for July 21, setting the stage for a cricketing feast. The Women's Asia Cup 2024 final will be played on July 28.
