If reports are to be believed, Rohit Sharma might have played his last Test match for India. It seems likely that the Indian captain won’t be picked for the Test squad again, and Jasprit Bumrah could take over the leadership role starting from the England tour in June-July this year.

Jasprit Bumrah As The Future Indian Test Captain

One of the main reasons behind this decision is that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking at Jasprit Bumrah as India’s future Test captain. This is also why the board was hesitant to take any risks with him for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

BCCI’s chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, had a tough call to make after receiving the latest medical report from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), led by Nitin Patel.

The report stated that while Bumrah’s recent scans were perfect, he hadn’t started bowling at full intensity yet. This put Agarkar in a tricky position regarding his selection for the Champions Trophy.

Due to which, the team selectors didn't take any risks and ruled him out of the tournament. The reason was his leadership potential and skills as a pacer. The management wanted to protect him, and he has been almost confirmed by the BCCI as India's next Test skipper.

According to PTI, Bumrah will likely lead Team India in the England series, and the report also provided an update on his IPL 2025 plans.

"It is understood that the main bone of contention was that Bumrah is yet to start bowling full tilt and those in the know of things said that it is very difficult to get match-fit in such a short time," PTI report said.

“Rather, he can come back for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then lead India in England as Rohit Sharma is unlikely to be picked for Tests again,” PTI wrote as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Rohit Sharma’s Struggles in Test Cricket

Rohit Sharma has been going through a rough patch in Test cricket. In the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he managed only 31 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 28.18. Once considered one of the finest batters of his generation, Rohit has struggled to make an impact. The year 2024 was his worst in Test cricket.

He averaged below 25 and recorded more single-digit scores than ever before. His form, especially in Tests, has dipped since India’s T20 World Cup win. In his last eight Test matches, he has scored only 164 runs at an average of 10.9.

With these struggles, the selectors seem ready to move on from Rohit Sharma in Tests and hand over the leadership to Jasprit Bumrah. The official announcement could come soon, especially before India’s Test series against England.
