On Wednesday, July 23, India will lock horns against England for the fourth Test that will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester. The visitors are not in a good position as the Shubman Gill-led side trail 1-2 after a heartbreak at Lord's.
India Eye History In Last Two Tests
Ahead of the do-or-die match, India are dealing with several injury concerns as they aim to win their first win at Old Trafford in Manchester. There is a lot online as the Shubman Gill-led side eye to win two consecutive matches to stun England 3-2 and win the series. It will be India's first series win in England since 2007.
The plan may sound simple, but executing it is not as easy as history too suggests. Notably, only thrice in cricket's history, a team trailing 0-1 or 1-2 in a five-match series, according to data from ESPN Cricinfo.
While, India are eyeing to become the fourth team to script this historic feat, this article will look at the three teams to have made the impossible look possible.
1. Australia vs England - 1936
The first time this feat was scripted was in the 1936 Ashes when Australia and England locked horns for a five-match Test series. Notably, England won the first two Tests and were just a win away from scripting history, but Australia turned the course of the series from the third Test and won three games in a trot.
It is the only time in Australia's history that they won a Test series after being 0-2 down, and Don Bradman became the first captain to do the unimaginable.
2. West Indies vs Australia - 1992
Australia were at the receiving end this time around as they were 1-0 up after the first three Tests, courtesy of two drawn Tests. However, Windies made a stunning comeback and won the last two Tests to win the series 2-1, which included a one-run win in the fourth Test, which is the joint-smallest margin in a Test win.
3. England vs South Africa - 1998
England are the latest team to win a Test series after being 1-0 down in a five-match Test series, where they stunned South Africa in the 1998 series. It was a stunning series as the Proteas were 1-0 up, but England won two close Tests to claim the series for themselves.
