In a significant development, star Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been penalised for committing a Level 1 offence during the first Test against Australia in Nagpur.

Jadeja, who was seen taking a substance off Mohammed Siraj's palm and rubbing it on the index finger of his bowling arm on day 1, has been found guilty of not informing the on-field umpires about his action.

Thus, he has been accused by the ICC of breaching article 2.20 of the code of conduct, relating to displaying behaviour not aligning with the spirit of the game.

As a result, the southpaw has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees, with one demerit point being added to his disciplinary records.

However, no formal hearing was conducted by the match officials, as Jadeja accepted the penalty, admitting to the on-field offence.

Meanwhile, the veteran cricketer didn't let the incident affect his performance in the game, as he helped India demolish Australia in the Test match.

The 34-year-old, who made his international comeback in the series, starred with both bat and ball, amassing 70 runs and scalping seven wickets across both innings.

With India 1-0 up in the series, the two teams will clash in the second Test match in Delhi starting February 17.
