The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a significant step in its ongoing efforts to regulate the pace of white-ball cricket matches. In a recent press release, the ICC announced the approval of a stop-clock system for white-ball cricket, set to be implemented on a trial basis from December 2023 to April 2024.

The new rule aims to address the longstanding issue of extended intervals between overs, contributing to the elongation of match durations. Under this trial regulation, teams failing to commence an over within one minute of the previous over's completion for the third time in an innings will incur a five-run penalty.

The press release highlighted the agreement reached by the Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) to introduce the stop-clock during men's One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). The clock will serve as a mechanism to monitor and enforce the time taken between overs, with the penalty acting as a deterrent for delays.

The move underscores the ICC's commitment to enhancing the viewer experience by ensuring a more dynamic and time-efficient format of the game. Time regulation has been an ongoing focus for the ICC, and the implementation of on-field penalties represents a proactive approach to address this concern in the world of international white-ball cricket.
