Sri Lanka gets fined by ICC [Source: @OfficialSLC/X.com]
Sri Lanka wrapped up a 2-0 ODI series victory over Zimbabwe in Harare but not without a disciplinary setback, as the ICC fined the team for a slow over-rate in the opening match.
Match referee Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel confirmed that Sri Lanka were one over short of the required quota in the first ODI at Harare Sports Club. As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, the Charith Asalanka-led side were fined five percent of their match fees for the offence.
Asalanka Accepts Penalty
Captain Asalanka accepted responsibility, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by umpires Langton Rusere and Forster Mutizwa, alongside Richard Kettleborough and fourth umpire Percival Sizara.
The ICC has been strict on over-rate violations, stressing that slow play disrupts the flow of the game and diminishes the overall spectator experience.
Zimbabwe Lose, But With Pride
Despite the penalty hanging over them, Sri Lanka remained focused on the field. Put into the chase in the second ODI, Zimbabwe rode on Ben Curran’s fluent 79, Sikandar Raza’s steady half-century, and Clive Madande’s late surge to post 277/7 in 50 overs. Dushmantha Chameera’s three wickets and Asitha Fernando’s disciplined spell kept the hosts in check during the middle overs.
In reply, Pathum Nissanka anchored the innings with a majestic 122, his seventh ODI hundred, while Asalanka continued his fine form with a brisk 71. The duo’s partnerships ensured Sri Lanka stayed ahead of the rate despite late wickets, sealing the win with five balls to spare.
For Zimbabwe, the series defeat came with positives in Curran and Raza’s form, but for Sri Lanka, the takeaway was twofold: a morale-boosting victory and a reminder that time management remains as crucial as runs and wickets.
