USA Cricket Board gets much-needed lifeline from ICC [Source: @mufaddal_vohra/X.com]
The ICC has granted a three-month reprieve to USA Cricket (USAC) to resolve its current governance issues. The decision was made at the ICC's Annual Board Meeting in Singapore on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
USAC has been under strain for more than a year because of mismanagement and internal matters. The situation became serious enough that the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the country’s top Olympic body, raised concerns about USAC's ability to function properly.
USA Cricket Escape Immediate Suspension After ICC Lifeline
Despite this, the ICC chose not to suspend USA Cricket. As per Forbes, ICC will give a 3-month breather to USAC to fix its issues and avoid a suspension.
The main reason behind the lifeline is that the United States is set to host the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, where cricket will be played.
With the host nation’s teams expected to get automatic qualification, the ICC is trying to avoid disrupting preparations for the Olympics.
However, there’s still uncertainty about who will select the men’s and women’s teams for the 2028 Games. If USAC fails to improve, the US Olympic Committee might not allow it to be in charge of the Olympic squads.
To deal with this, the ICC has opted to use a hybrid qualification system for the LA28 Olympics. This implies that a few teams will qualify from their ICC T20 rankings, and others will play through qualifiers. India, ranked No. 1 in T20 cricket, is likely to qualify automatically.
For now, USAC has a temporary lifeline, but the clock is ticking. If they don’t show real improvement in governance within the next three months, they risk serious action from both the ICC and the US Olympic authorities.
