The friendship between former Indian cricket stars Harbhajan Singh and MS Dhoni has been the subject of speculation for years. While they achieved tremendous success together, winning the T20 World Cup 2007, the ODI World Cup 2011, and several IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), it appears their personal relationship has cooled over time. Harbhajan Singh has now openly acknowledged that he hasn’t spoken to Dhoni in over a decade.
Harbhajan Confirms Rift With MS Dhoni
In a recent interview with News18, Harbhajan Singh shared details about his distant relationship with Dhoni. The last meaningful conversations between them were during their time playing for CSK in the IPL. Harbhajan admitted that even during those days, their interactions were limited to discussions about the game.
“No, I don’t speak to Dhoni. When I was playing at CSK, that’s when we spoke, but otherwise, we haven’t spoken. It’s been 10 years and more. I have no reason; perhaps he does. I don’t know what the reasons are. When we were playing in the IPL at CSK, that’s when we used to talk, and that, too, was restricted to the ground. After that, he did not come to my room, nor did I go to his,” Harbhajan Singh was quoted as saying by News18.
When Was The Last Time Harbhajan and Dhoni Played Together?
Harbhajan and Dhoni last played together for India in 2015 during an ODI against South Africa. They later reunited in 2018 for CSK in the IPL but maintained minimal interaction outside the field. Harbhajan clarified that he doesn’t hold any grudges against Dhoni but hinted that a mutual lack of effort to maintain their bond might be the cause of the distance.
“I don’t have anything against him. If he has something to say, he can tell me. I never tried to call him because I have a lot of passion. I only ring up those who pick up my calls. I don’t have the time otherwise,” he explained.
Harbhajan and Dhoni were crucial to India’s success during their playing days. Dhoni’s captaincy and Harbhajan’s bowling played crucial roles in India’s wins in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Harbhajan picked up seven and nine wickets in those tournaments, respectively, while Dhoni’s captaincy became legendary.
After the 2015 ODI World Cup, both Harbhajan and Yuvraj Singh were sidelined from the Indian team. Harbhajan officially retired from all forms of cricket in 2021, while Dhoni continues to play in the IPL and is preparing for the 2025 season with CSK.
