  • I Cannot Comment At The Moment Sourav Ganguly On The Probability Of India Hosting The Asia Cup 2022

‘I cannot comment at the moment,’ Sourav Ganguly on the probability of India hosting the Asia Cup 2022

The 2022 Asia Cup is scheduled to be held next month in Sri Lanka. The six-team event will be held after a period of four years, with India being the defending champions.

However, recent events unfolding in Sri Lanka have cast a cloud of uncertainty over the progression of the tournament. The country is currently in the midst of a political and economic crisis.

BCCI President subtly comments on Asia Cup's preparations

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly commented on the outlook for the 2022 Asia Cup. The former Indian captain was asked about the event being shifted to India. Ganguly stated that a decision on the same was too early to make and has advised to at least wait for a month.

"I cannot comment at the moment (about the possibility of India hosting the event). We will keep monitoring (the situation in Sri Lanka). Australia is playing there. The Sri Lankan team is also doing well. I cannot comment at the moment. Let us wait for a month," said Ganguly.

Recently, Australia completed a successful tour of Sri Lanka which included two Test matches, five ODIs and three T20Is. Despite the current events unfolding in the Asian country, the series went ahead as planned.

You do not win ICC tournaments all the timeSourav Ganguly

Two crucial ICC tournaments will be held in the space of a year, with the T20 World Cup taking place in a couple of months. Meanwhile, the ODI World Cup will be held in India in 2023.

Speaking about India's failure to win the marquee ICC events, Sourav Ganguly stated that a team could not win these tournaments all the time. The former Indian player said that India has been quite decent in ICC events in the last decade, reaching the latter stages of almost every single tournament.

"You do not win ICC tournaments all the time. They (India) were in the finals of the Champions Trophy in 2017, and they lost in the semis in the 2019 WC. It has not been that they have been absolutely poor in World Cups but as you rightly said, whenever India play, the expectations are more of winning," said Ganguly.

"They are a great side; they have some fantastic players, and hopefully, when it comes to Australia this time, they will stand up and deliver," the BCCI President concluded.
