Cricket Australia has greenlit its maiden overseas Day-Night Test during June’s West Indies tour, pending floodlight upgrades at Kingston’s Sabina Park. The third Test will feature the pink ball if facilities meet standards, challenging Australia’s unblemished away record in day-night cricket.

This follows West Indies’ stunning 2024 Gabba upset, where Shamar Joseph’s 7/68 halted Australia’s 12-match winning streak under lights. The series, starting weeks after Australia’s World Test Championship final against South Africa, includes red-ball Tests in Barbados and Grenada.

CWI’s Bold Stance Ahead Of Australia's Tour

CWI CEO Chris Dehring aims to build on last year’s triumph, rejecting the “upset” tag. A successful Sabina Park finale would mark Australia’s first overseas pink-ball Test.

“The last time we played Australia in Australia, we pulled off what they consider an upset – but we certainly don’t. We intend to go one better.”  His confidence stems from West Indies’ Gabba heist, where Joseph’s fiery spell sealed an eight-run win – Australia’s lone day-night Test loss in 14 matches.

While Australia dominates day-night cricket, the Caribbean venture introduces uncharted territory. Cricket Australia’s Peter Roach confirmed openness to the fixture.

“We’re awaiting further information from Cricket West Indies about the successful installation of the new lights. We encourage teams to play day-night cricket here in Australia once a season, so when an opportunity to reciprocate comes up, we are very supportive.”

A Litmus Test for Both Sides

The proposed Sabina Park clash could redefine Australia’s adaptability and West Indies’ resurgence. Joseph’s heroics last year exposed vulnerabilities in Australia’s pink-ball armor, while Dehring emphasized leveraging home conditions. “We wish to do one better, but this time in our backyard.”

Roach added, “The planned lighting specifications look more than adequate to host day-night Test cricket. Provided these are met, CWI and CA are aligned on playing the match as a day-night Test.”

With three Tests and five T20Is scheduled, the tour promises high stakes. For Australia, it’s a chance to avenge their Gabba shocker; for West Indies, proof that their Gabba miracle was no fluke.
