Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a leadership overhaul, with Shai Hope replacing Rovman Powell as the T20I captain, consolidating his role as white-ball skipper after already leading the ODI side. Powell’s exit follows a tenure that revitalized the T20I squad, guiding them to back-to-back World Cup semifinals.

Meanwhile, Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down after a seven-year stint, prioritizing a transition phase ahead of the home series against Australia.

Rovman Powell’s Legacy & Hope’s New Challenge

CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe confirmed Powell’s dignified response to the decision, emphasizing his contributions.

“I have expressed to him [Powell] that he ought to feel dignified by his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a crucial role in elevating our T20 team to new heights. His leadership has left a strong foundation, and we are grateful for his efforts.”

Hope’s appointment, recommended by head coach Darren Sammy, aligns with CWI’s vision for continuity. The wicketkeeper-batter, known for his calm demeanour, now shoulders the task of uniting a mercurial T20I squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Kraigg Brathwaite Bows Out as Test Captain

In another development, Brathwaite’s resignation, first hinted at during the 2025 Pakistan tour, was formalized ahead of Australia’s Caribbean visit. In a statement, CWI acknowledged his decision.

“Understanding the importance of continuity, Brathwaite wanted to ensure the team had a period of transition before his departure. As a result, he has submitted his resignation ahead of the home series against Australia, giving the new leadership time to establish itself.”

Notably, under Brathwaite, West Indies claimed 10 Test wins, including the Gabba heist (2024) and a series victory over England (2022).
