The cricketing world is about to witness its most-loved spectacle, with Australia crossing swords with South Africa in the third World Test Championship final. The much-anticipated affair will take place at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, which holds special significance and rich cricketing heritage.
On one side we have Australia, a team that is as tough as nail and refuses to give up even in the most precarious situations. On the other hand, there is South Africa, a side that is raring to script history and bag the prestigious WTC mace against the odds.
As the stage is set for a cracking contest at the Mecca of Cricket, here are several phenomenal milestones that players from both these sides could achieve during the game.
Major Records That Could Be Broken In WTC Final
Travis Head aims to go past Virat Kohli on elite list
Swashbuckling Australian batter Travis Head has been the go-to man for his team in the ICC finals. Head has already struck 318 runs across just three innings in the final of ICC events. If he scores 94 runs across both innings of the WTC final, the southpaw will eclipse Virat Kohli (411 runs) on the list of highest run-getters in the ICC finals.
Cummins, Starc in race to surpass Bumrah
Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah is the highest wicket-taker in the current WTC cycle with 77 scalps under his belt. However, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc aren't far behind from the ace pacer, having bagged 73 and 72 wickets, respectively.
Thus, Cummins and Starc need only five and six wickets, respectively, to register more wickets than Bumrah in the WTC 2023-25.
Bavuma on the verge of overtaking Elgar in twin milestones
South African skipper Temba Bavuma has a golden opportunity to etch his name in the history books by dethroning Dean Elgar as South Africa's most successful batter and captain in the WTC.
Bavuma (1890 runs) needs to score only 46 runs across two innings to eclipse Elgar's tally of 1835 runs, the most by a South African in WTC history. Also, if he leads South Africa to their maiden WTC title, Bavuma will record the most WTC wins by a Proteas captain, surpassing Elgar, who has eight wins under his name.
Lyon on brink of breaking Ashwin's record
Ravichandran Ashwin has the most number of five-wicket hauls (11) across all editions of the World Test Championship. If Nathan Lyon takes a fifer in the WTC final, he will surpass the retired Indian spinner and register the most five-wicket hauls in the tournament's history.
Maharaj eyes history as South African spinner
South Africa's experienced bowler Keshav Maharaj has already scalped 198 wickets in Test cricket. If he takes two more wickets, he will become the first South African spinner to take 200 wickets in the longest format.
