Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins in the nets [Source: @ICC/X.com]
In an encouraging sign for Australia, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has returned to the nets. From the looks of it, Hazlewood is recovering from the hamstring injury that ruled him out of the first Ashes Test in Perth.
Captain Pat Cummins was also seen bowling in the nets. Cummins used a pink ball as he is pushing his return from a back injury for the Gabba day-night Test on December 4.
Cummins trains with pink ball; Hazlewood could return in Adelaide
According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the pair trained at Cricket Central in Sydney. Their session took place while New South Wales played a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania nearby.
Hazlewood bowled with a red ball during his net session. This indicates his comeback target is the Adelaide Test, not the upcoming Gabba match. Notably, for the unaware, Adelaide has reverted to a day Test this year.
Cummins continues to make good progress in his recovery. He had previously ramped up his bowling in the nets in Perth. As it looks like now, selectors need to be confident that he can handle a Test match workload.
Significantly, if Pat Cummins recovers in time ahead of the Gabba Test, it would mean a bench session for Perth debutant Brendan Doggett, who did his part well in The Ashes opener by bagging 5 wickets.
Rest days for players ahead of Gabba Test
The early finish in Perth has provided an 11-day gap before the second Test. This offers more time for player recovery. However, the schedule becomes more condensed after Adelaide.
The Boxing Day Test in Melbourne follows Adelaide after just a four-day break. The same short turnaround applies before the New Year's Test in Sydney, if those matches go the full five days.
Nevertheless, the players have returned to their home cities after the conclusion of the Perth Test and will be back at the camp six days before the Gabba Test.
