Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed their group-stage exit from the IPL 2025 last night, with their high-voltage clash against RCB getting abandoned due to rain. This was KKR's second washed-out fixture, ensuring their elimination from the marquee event.

KKR Complete Hattrick Of Shameful Feat

Under Shreyas Iyer's leadership, KKR enjoyed stellar success last season, emerging triumphant by defeating SRH in a one-sided final. However, the 2025 season was entirely the opposite, as they failed to qualify for the playoffs.

This was the third straight time KKR suffered a group-stage exit as the defending IPL champions. They won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 while failing to enter the playoffs in subsequent years.

They repeated it this year too, joining Mumbai Indians, the only other team to get knocked out of the group-stage thrice as the defending champions.

Teams To Have Suffered Group-Stage Exit As Defending IPL Champions

  • RR - IPL 2009 (6th with 6 wins in 14 matches)
  • KKR - IPL 2013 (7th with 6 wins in 16 matches)
  • KKR- IPL 2015 (5th with 7 wins in 14 matches)
  • MI- IPL 2016 (5th with 7 wins in 14 matches)
  • MI- IPL 2018 (5th with 6 wins)
  • MI- IPL 2021 (7th with 7 wins in 14 matches)
  • CSK- IPL 2022 (9th with 4 wins in 14 matches)
  • CSK - IPL 2024 (5th with 7 wins in 14 matches)
  • KKR - IPL 2025*

As shown in the above table, inaugural title winners Rajasthan Royals became the first-ever defending champions to make a group-stage exit in the IPL 2009 edition. The infamous feat has been reattained by only three IPL teams- KKR (in 2013, 2015 and 2025), MI (in 2016, 2018, 2021) and CSK (in 2022 and 2024).

Thus, considering they have already been eliminated from the competition, the Knight Riders would be keen to win their final game and sign off on a high note.
