Hasaranga Suspended, Gurbaz Penalised For Misconduct During SL vs AFG 3rd T20I

In a massive development, Sri Lanka's T20I captain, Wanindu Hasaranga, is sidelined following a recent disciplinary action by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The World No. two T20I bowler has been handed a two-match suspension after his demerit points tally hit the five-point threshold over a two-year period.

Hasaranga and Gurbaz face ICC sanctions for Code of Conduct violations

This development comes as a result of his latest breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, which also saw him incur a fine of 50 per cent of his match fee along with three demerit points.

The breach in question involved Wanindu Hasaranga violating article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, specifically engaging in personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, or match referee during an international match.

As a result of reaching five demerit points, Hasaranga faces a conversion to two suspension points, equating to a ban from one Test match or two ODIs or T20Is, depending on the format of his next appearances. Consequently, he will miss Sri Lanka's upcoming first two T20Is against Bangladesh.

The incident that led to Hasaranga's penalty occurred during the conclusion of the third T20I between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Dambulla. The player confronted umpire Lyndon Hanibal to dispute a decision not to call a high full toss a no-ball.

In a related incident from the same match, Afghanistan player Rahmanullah Gurbaz was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Gurbaz's violation pertained to disobeying an umpire's instruction during the match, with the specific action being altering his bat's grip despite clear directives against such behaviour.

This action led to Gurbaz receiving one demerit point, bringing his total to two within 24 months.

Both Hasaranga and Rahmanullah admitted to their respective offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, negating the need for formal hearings. The charges were brought by the on-field umpires, third umpire, and fourth umpire of the match.

Meanwhile, despite the disciplinary issues of their captain, Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a 2-1 victory, with Hasaranga being named Player of the Series for his outstanding all-round performance.

This recent suspension, however, poses challenges for Sri Lanka as they prepare to face Bangladesh without their leading T20I bowler and captain.
