England are set to have a new leader in T20 cricket, with Harry Brook expected to take over as captain. However, when it comes to the One Day International (ODI) team, the decision is still up in the air between Brook and Ben Stokes.
Jos Buttler recently stepped down as England’s white-ball captain after a tough Champions Trophy campaign. Brook, 26, was his vice-captain and has become an important player across all formats. However, he struggled in England’s recent tours of India and Pakistan and even pulled out of the IPL to focus on international duties.
Brook Likely To Lead England In T20I; Ben Stokes To Captain Ins ODI
As per the Telegraph Sport reports suggest England’s management is leaning towards appointing Brook as the T20 captain, especially with the T20 World Cup happening next year in India. But for the ODI captaincy, it’s still a contest between Brook and Stokes.
Both players are open to the role. If Brook takes on both jobs, he’ll have a heavy workload across all formats. Meanwhile, Stokes has been dealing with injuries, including a hamstring issue, and hasn’t played much white-ball cricket lately. He skipped the IPL and The Hundred this year, focusing mainly on Test matches.
Despite this, England’s managing director Rob Key believes Stokes would be a strong candidate for the ODI captaincy due to his success as Test captain. Under him, England has won 19 Tests in the past three years. However, his fitness remains a concern.
England’s next white-ball matches will be in June against West Indies.
