The Indian women’s cricket team is bracing itself for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with a fitness and conditioning camp in Bengaluru later this week. Notably, several key members like vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues will not feature in the early stage of the camp owing to their respective commitments in overseas T20 leagues.

Mere days prior to the launch of a rigorous training camp, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly made a huge announcement by appointing a sports psychologist

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has often emphasised the need of a sports physiologist for the team in a bid to counter pressure and mental fatigue. Getting in line with the skipper’s request, the BCCI has reportedly engaged a physiologist for conducting mental conditioning sessions with the ‘Women in Blue’.

Under Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian players were recently jolted by Sri Lanka in the final of the 2024 Women’s T20 Asia Cup in Dambulla. With less than two months to go for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the BCCI has likely appointed the mental health expert to address the psychological challenges faced by the players off late, and the potential mental hurdles they might come across at the showpiece event.

The aforementioned camp will be spread in two phases, and will likely feature the return of Indian spinner Shreyanka Patil, who was ruled out of the squad from the recently-concluded T20 Asia Cup owing to a finger injury.

India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign is scheduled to commence with a match against New Zealand Women on October 4 in Sylhet. Harmanpreet Kaur and co. are clubbed in Group A alongside New Zealand, defending champions Australia, arch-rivals Pakistan and fellow continental heavyweight Sri Lanka.
